Tottenham’s season starts now.

Posted on December 25, 2013 by Scraggs

So here we are  seventeen games into the season, a season that we started with great expectation despite losing a superstar in the form of Gareth Bale to the tune of £86m, a player rated by many as the third best in the world and capable of earning any team a dozen points alone because he was just that good. Looking back to last season after the same number of games Tottenham stood fourth in the league level on points with Chelsea ahead of them. It is worth noting that Chelsea won their game in hand and took a three point lead on us.

Twelve months later and Tottenham are now seventh and instead of being just three points behind Chelsea we are now a single solitary point worse off despite the great Jose Mourinho leading them to glory. United were a huge thirteen points ahead of us in spite of our glorious win at Old Trafford and now they are two points behind us.

It is true that our goal difference has suffered but take a look at the table today and you will actually see that as a club our points total has improved despite the vast upheavals, Tottenham have a total of thirty points already with two very winnable home games to come and anything is possible this season despite the stories of doom and gloom. Imagine if Tim Sherwood can the team performing at White Hart Lane like they should, add the best away record in the entire league and this could still turn into a glorious season. Of those teams ahead of us only Chelsea and Liverpool have yet visited and are the only teams we have to visit, and have you ever seen a better run in to the season than the last half dozen games scheduled.

Just four weeks ago we were already eleven points behind the leaders and now that has been cut to just six points and by the time we face Manchester United at the start of the New Year I wouldn’t mind betting it is even closer than that. I would suggest that there are seven genuine contenders for a position in the top four and right now and despite all the adverse reaction to our previous coach, performances, lack of goals and even criticism of the latest appointment from many Tottenham fans, including ourselves at JTN I might add, we are still firmly in the mix. Tottenham certainly have one of the strongest squads they have ever assembled, the team and the strikers have yet to fire and we really believe the best is yet to to come.

When I look at the table and compare our situation to last season and then look at the number of quality players available with still more who will soon return from injury, then there should still be a feelgood factor, perhaps we have had our blip, Liverpool have two defining away fixtures in quick succession, Arsenal and the Ozil factor is wearing off a little, Chelsea have not hit the heights and their strikers have fared worse than ours. I look around and see only City as an outstanding team but even they have off days, optimism never really disappeared, much of the the doom  was planted in our minds by the media following a few very poor results when closer analysis showed we were actually doing better than last season in terms of points and progression in cups.

Tomorrow at the Lane is the start of a new era for us and I am beginning to believe it could be the start of something special, we are in this scrap for a place at the top table for next season and we start with the visit of WBA, Sherwood will set the team up to storm them from the outset and then the White Hart Lane crowd will respond, the visitors will be expecting a bombardment from the terraces and the Tottenham team, let’s not disappoint them.

  1. Alee says:

I think the ‘our season starts now’ moment has come and gone.

  2. steve says:

You might think so but here we go again whatever you might think of Tim

  3. It makes me laugh how Tottham fans now thinks they could win the league just bcos of one lucky own goal win.

    • Tony says:

Does it say anywhere that they can win the league just that they are in with a shot at top four and they will be if they win next two home games, does that make you laugh?

    • Jide says:

Why don’t you just go away eh? I cannot see the point of you making any comment if you are too stupid to have a reasonable and honest opinion on an article that is right in front of you that you have to lie about something that is not even there. Where in the article did it mention spurs will win the league? I do not know the team you support, and to be honest as you are this dumb I do not want to know. But why do you lot always want to comment on a team that has nothing to do with you? Is your team that bland?

The likes of you have this belief that they are clever and funny, but the reality is you end up displaying utter stupidity. With a name like yours, nobody is surprised!

      Please stay away. Buffoon.

      • lou says:

well said I kept looking for some mention of winning the league and couldn’t see it because as you say it doesn’t exist. A couple of home wins and the season could be back on track.
Hope Sherwood can produce because us supporters are due something positive.

  4. lou says:

    And finishes now

  5. lou says:

I’m not normally a negative person but that’s 3 games now and at no stage have we had any control of a game. the back four have been so exposed they look worse players than they are. Capoue is an experienced International who has played as a def. midfielder all his career and he continues to be overlooked. We are going to be in serious trouble against utd and arsenal as he has no idea tactically. Same formation just change personnel isn’t the answer at the top level. Levy, Redknapp. Pleat and all the others talking Sherwood up as the answer and the right way forwad for the club base that opinion on what exactly? he talks a good game, he bleeds Spurs, he has been there for 5 years and he watches all the games, that is every supporter but it doesn’t qualify us to coach the 1st team.
I’m praying I’m wrong and that when injuries clear up things will improve and they should but we all expected a bit more than we are getting.
