Tromso v Tottenham, So meaningless and yet so important.

Posted on November 28, 2013 by Eddie S

Tottenham take on Tromso tonight in what should really be a meaningless fixture in the fifth game of the Europe league group stage, but because of Sunday’s horror show at Manchester City it has taken on extra significance. AVB especially and some of his players including record signing Roberto Soldado have borne the brunt of all the bad feeling from the media and a section of unhappy Tottenham supporters.

Tottenham are through to the knockout stages and have all but won the group so tonight should have given AVB the opportunity to give several of the youngsters their opportunity, instead he must ensure that some semblance of order is re-established before the champions of England come visiting on Sunday, it is also an opportunity to continue the work needed to sharpen the striking skills of soldado and find the solution to creating the opportunities he needs from the team.

Tromso have recently suffered the fate of relegation after finishing second bottom and their last fixture was also an embarrassing 4-1 defeat, they need to get back on track and start the process of winning back their own fans, they must be hurting from the events and a decent result in their last competitive game at home will help. Tromso have no chance of qualification and so should at last be able to relax and play their game.

Possible starting lineup tonight v Tromso

Possible starting lineup tonight v Tromso

This fixture is being played on an artificial surface and in freezing conditions so not conducive to good football or likely to be favourable to the Tottenham team. AVB has left ten of his squad behind because of injury, others for a break and some because they are susceptible to injury on such a playing surface, even so it is likely that some of the youngsters who travel might get some minutes but at the very least the experience of travelling in tournament conditions with the first team.

Roberto Soldado as the only senior striker travelling will surely start the game while Fryers and Naughton are the most senior of the fullbacks, beyond that  AVB will pick his team to go out and establish control and that should then hopefully allow him to blood a couple of the up and coming kids in the group. Our likely starting lineup shown still looks incredibly impressive and capable, it allows some of the new boys to grow into the team and still has an extremely youthful look to it.

This is not the best fixture to have before the weekend as the playing surface and conditions will not suit Tottenham at all, they should win the game but whatever happens it will not relieve the pressure on the coach and players, win and it was only to be expected, anything less and the critics of AVB will be out in force once again tomorrow.

A decent performance in less than ideal conditions.

Dembele looked good for spells but also looked a little hesitant at times. A well worked goal finished with skill and confidence. Very unlucky not to finish the 2nd of his chances moments later, instead hitting the side of the post.

An own-goal pressured by Chiriches to eventually get us off the mark, who I thought played well also and was still full of energy in the final stages.

All the team were decent, perhaps Chadli’s shooting was disappointing and again no real chances created for Bob.

Great away support and 5 out of 5 and a guaranteed top spot. Well done to the lads.

    Roll on Sunday! COYS!

Any negatives on that showing would be very unfair, absolutely dire conditions and a strange surface for the team to play on. Did Friedel have to make more than the odd stop, I won’t say save because there were none really.
Chiriches just impresses me more with every outing and Dembele is almost back. Capoue did ok but needs a couple more games and not the Man u sort. Chadli did ok as did Lamela in his 15mins. Fryers is gaining more experience with every outing but cannot wait to see Rose back and he is the one player in the spurs system who will put the balls in that Soldado needs.
Antbody knocking that is being too picky.

Well seen as it was a reply off of my comment I imagine you think I am being too picky.

I really don’t think I am. I don’t call the team derogatory names or speak badly of them or AVB.

I think my minor concerns are real, Chadli’s ballooning shots over and lack of service to Bob. It’s not like we peppered Tromso’s goal who are in huge decline.

Please realise I “support” Spurs, not just follow them and moan.

Spurs have done very well tonight as I said in difficult conditions.

Don’t just pick up on my concerns and say I’m being picky, read my comment again and you’ll see I spoke more favourably than negatively.

        • steve says:

Sorry if you thought it was aimed at you as it wasnt in anyway but against any who thoght that they might comment otherwise. Cant disagree with amything you said including Chadlis wild shooting.
With you on this and by replying to you understand how the misunderstanding occurred.

    • Tony says:

Chiriches may have done enough to pinch a spot for Sunday as has Dembele. The travelling fans were amazing as always and you can bet there are no anti AVB’s amongst them. 70% possession and almost total domination says it all in difficult conditions and artificial surface. Lamela only played 15 mins but seems to be growing into it, don’t recall a single stray pass and a constant threat.
Looking forward to Sunday but win lose or draw nothing should change other than to support the boys until the last kick of the season.
