Villa v Spurs preview and projected team.

Posted on September 23, 2013 by Scraggs

Andre Villas-Boas said during his briefing today that the Capital One cup is probably at the bottom of the club’s list of priorities, but still admits that the quality of his squad is such that he will still field a very good team. He remains concerned at the scheduling that has not favoured Tottenham and has meant that they face a third game in just six days.

Aston Villa have a number of injury concerns going into this tie and Christian Benteke is a definite non starter while Agbonlahor is a serious doubt, no doubt Lambert and the club will not risk their stars for this competition needing to ensure that they do not face a fight later in the season for their Premiership future.

Tottenham will undoubtedly take this opportunity to play the remaining squad players provided they are fit, unfortunately we now learn that Jermain Defoe is a doubt with a groin strain. The starting eleven should look something like this provided they are fit to play on the night but expect the odd change and a very strong bench in case of need and to fill v villa AVB faces a bit of a dilemma with Chelsea due to visit White Hart Lane on Saturday, because participation in the Champions League is the top priority for next season league fixtures must remain his main concern, against all but the very best clubs the full squad should be able to cope with any league opposition but AVB v Mourinho is a special encounter and he will wish to have a fit and rested eleven take to the field.

Neither team will be at anything like full strength, but while Tottenham should have too much for a weakened Villa team it will not be so straightforward, they face a team with home advantage and they themselves will be a team thrown together by the circumstance of extreme fixture congestion.

Expect a tough night made more difficult by a spate of minor injuries robbing AVB of the opportunity to field a better balanced team.

I do not expect any of the first team to play against the Villa in the Capital One cup. The game against Chelski is so important. I am so looking forward to seeing Chiriches playing for Spurs for the first time. What a feeling!
