Villa v Tottenham Preview.

Posted on October 17, 2013 by Tony

At last the second international break of the season is over and for once it was not only a productive period for England but also for Tottenham, all but one of the players called up for international duty returned in the knowledge that their country had either qualified for Brazil or were in the final playoffs later in the year. An added bonus has obviously been Andros Townsend who returns to Tottenham’s ranks as a genuine player of international class and on such a high his performances can only improve, at least in the short term.

As well as the good news for all the Tottenham players on duty, with the exception of Christian Eriksen, a number of others have had the opportunity to regain full fitness, train and rest in preparation for the resumption of the season this weekend when we visit Aston Villa. Tottenham have already demolished a Villa team in their own back yard by 4-0 but both clubs go into this game with contrasting recent results, Totenham have a creditable home draw with Chelsea followed by a disastrous 3-0 trouncing by West Ham at White Hart Lane. Villa in that time defeated Manchester City at home and followed that up with a decent goalless draw at Hull.

Could Sandro be set to start for Tottenham this week.

Could Sandro be set to start for Tottenham this week.

This has all the makings of a dangerous fixture for Tottenham, man for man and after a crushing victory in the cup it should be three points but it is never that easy, Christian Benteke could return for Villa although it is likely that it might only be from the bench, if it even happens at all this week. Irrespective of Villa’s position ,which is now once again respectable, it must be remembered that they have defeated Arsenal and City and deserved much more than a controversial defeat to Chelsea, in front of their own supporters they will be up for it and anxious to avenge that cup drubbing.

What can Tottenham expect from their squad? a few will be desperate to get back amongst the action having been overlooked by their country or just returning from injury, that would include Michael Dawson, Roberto Soldado, Sandro, Danny Rose and Aaron Lennon amongst others.

Last time out AVB possibly made a mistake in falling for media calls for Jermain Defoe to be given a starting spot up front but hopefully he won’t fall for that again, Soldado might not have hit the goal trail to the extent expected just yet, but the support is still with him and most fans realise that Defoe is not and never will be the answer, he is a stand in and a goal scorer useful from the bench. We are still none the wiser in relation to the situation with Adebayor and don’t suppose we ever shall be.

Aaron Lennon will offer the width the team needs to combat defensive setups.

Before the international break my personal belief was that provided Lennon was fit then he would start the Villa game having had the opportunity to work, in particular, with Soldado over the last week or so but such was the impact of Andros Townsend on the international scene that he is almost untouchable at the moment, nevertheless there should still be room for both players and it might be interesting to start Townsend onto the left and for he and Lennon to regularly switch positions over the course of the game. We know that Townsend is not up to the quality of Gareth Bale but he is two years younger and will continue to improve, right now there are plenty of similarities and it will be interesting to see just what AVB has in store for him in relation to tactical switches and whether he might blossom in other positions as did Bale.

It would come as no surprise if Sandro, Lennon and Soldado all started the game against Villa this week having had the benefit of working with the coaches since the West Ham game.

Good choice but hard to leave out Townsend at the moment.would like to see Lamela playing just behind Soldado at some point he is was being groomed by Roma to replace Totti so right wing was never going to be his best position.
