Wenger tips Tottenham for the title.

Posted on August 16, 2013 by Scraggs

Following on from Fergie last year suggesting Tottenham were close to mounting a title challenge, both Jose Mourinho and now Arsene Wenger have also joined the bandwagon and recognised the advances made by them in recent seasons, certainly the gap between the top spot and as far down as sixth has been closing for a while now. Once the top three or four were away and clear with half a dozen fixtures still remaining but the challenge for a Champions League spot is now regularly resting on the last game of the season.

This season promises to be like no other as each of the top three have appointed a new coach suggesting that those close behind might be in a position to cause an upset or two. It is now becoming more recognised that as many as six clubs are far closer in terms of squad quality than at any time before and a real challenge from some unlikely clubs could be on.

As much as the current top four might ridicule Tottenham and Liverpool both clubs improved significantly with their new coaches last season and both have considerably strengthened their squads already this summer. So far only Manchester City have been busier in the transfer window than the two sleeping giants of English football, United and Arsenal though are in danger of ending up almost empty handed after relying upon a couple of specific targets, only to find that they are not available or not prepared to join them at this point. Almost certainly both clubs will buy to boost their numbers and freshen up their squads but not with the quality of player that they had hoped for.

All this means is that the public might well be in for a treat with possibly the most open and exciting Premiership season ever, imagine six clubs in with a shout for the title with  ten or twelve fixtures remaining, what an enormous boost that will be for for viewing figures and the demand for tickets to matches. This promises to be a great season for the league, if not for European glory, as those involved might just have to concentrate their efforts on trying to secure a qualifying spot for the following season rather than save their best players for European fixtures.

This should be one of the most competitive seasons ever as Southampton, Swansea and even Norwich have gone for it in the transfer market, Everton seem to have managed to retain all of their squad and added one or two more quality players so will be competitive once again. My guess is a much lower points total for the eventual champions and plenty of shock results along the way.
