Which Tottenham team for Newcastle tussle?

Posted on November 09, 2013 by Scraggs

Tomorrow Tottenham take on a dangerous Newcastle team, a team capable of losing to bottom club Sunderland one day and beating title pretenders Chelsea just a matter of a few days later. Tomorrow they travel to London to try to improve upon just 26 wins in 107 games in the capital against a Tottenham team that had a European fixture on Thursday while Newcastle have had a week to prepare for the game.

We know that Tottenham will rest many of the players that took part in the game in midweek but that does not take away the fact that dedicated training and tactics for this game probably could not commence until Friday and puts them at a slight disadvantage in that respect. Performances from some players in recent midweek cup fixtures have enabled a few of them to start in the Premier League at the weekend, Lewis Holtby, Sandro and Chiriches among them. On Thursday the standout performer was Erik Lamela who finally earned his spurs and gave a performance of incredible skill but worked extremely hard and took plenty of hard knocks for the cause, it now remains to be seen whether it is enough to start tomorrow.

Sandro took a knock last week at Everton which coincided with Etienne Capoue returning to action following a long layoff, his withdrawal after less than an hour leads me to believe that he will be called upon to replace Sandro this week.

Younes Kaboul played another ninety minutes and after two hours against Hull just a week earlier it hoped that his injury woes are now behind him, right now he probably needs more games before he will be ready to step up to Premiership level, he needs a tough game to really sharpen his skills to the desired level but once he does then he will certainly add more pace to the back line.

Other issues for AVB to decide upon is whether to persevere with Holtby or revert back to Eriksen, maybe he could actually give a roving role to Erik Lamela, that would prevent the need to juggle with Townsend’s position within the team. Over on the left will he retain Lennon or bring back Sigurdsson in the absence of Chadli through injury. Does he persevere with Naughton until Danny Rose finally returns from what was initially a minor toe injury or again moves Jan Vertonghen across to the left?

Even as I am writing this my head is spinning with the options that this squad of players presents to AVB, for years there seems to have been a first eleven and the rest were backup, arguably there have even been times when there wasn’t even a first eleven to talk of, now Tottenham have a first twenty or more and AVB has to keep them all happy and motivated.

As the number of players in the treatment room reduces picking a team gets harder simply because there is an argument for playing just about any member of this squad such is it’s quality, this is our prediction on this occasion.
