Who is looking at the Tottenham exit door?

Posted on December 24, 2013 by Tony

After almost a season and a half of planning and buying for the modern world of football formations it seems that in one fell swoop it has been abandoned and we are about to embark on the good old fashioned 4 4 2, just £150m spent on players since the beginning of last season, most of it four short months ago. I suppose some might see it transformed into a 4 2 4 at times as the wide midfielders and fullbacks are charged with hitting the byline and getting crosses in, it can of course be highly entertaining but it can just as easily be a recipe for disaster against the top teams in football, why do you think it is so long since Tottenham have had the upper hand over the likes of United, Arsenal and Chelsea for any length of time, it isn’t just the quality of player, it isn’t just a lack of tactical awareness, sometimes it has simply been a case of not having the players schooled in the art of dealing with teams that play a different way.

With the transfer window almost upon us and Tim Sherwood firmly ensconced in his new head coach role just who of the now old look Tottenham players face an uncertain future and how many will scramble for the exit door? Every player purchased in the last transfer window is now under severe scrutiny, all have come from teams that play the European style of football which is what Baldini was obviously charged with spending the money on!  Already Etienne Capoue and Lewis Holtby have been asked to play in an under 21 fixture, both sat on the bench against Southampton and when most expected Capoue to be the replacement for the injured Dembele he remained seated.

The Danish press are aware that Christian Eriksen was reasonably impressive in a midfield two on Sunday but recognise that he could easily be exposed against major teams and those operating with an extra midfielder, they also recognise the fact that there are other stronger contenders still unavailable due to injury and suspension add that to the fact that Sherwood has promised to bring youth into the team like Bentaleb and Tom Carroll when he returns from QPR, and there are others.

While I am not one of those that subscribes to the idea that Paulinho has been a major disappointment, he should by now be into double figures in terms of goals scored but he continues to get into those positions and at some point there is every chance it will come good. Currently Tottenham have five expensive new recruits and Sandro all vying for just two central midfield berths in most games, with the World Cup creeping ever closer those highlighted might be fearing for their positions and/or their future at the club and who can blame them.

It seems that our young star of the future Erik Lamela is another who might suffer from a lack of impact as much as the ideas of the new regime, Napoli are intersted in taking him on a free while Milan and Juventus are willing to swap some worn out unwanted names in a swap deal, all quite ridiculous ideas if true, having said that if one of them is prepared to give Daniel Levy his money back, or close to it, it might well happen.

So as quickly as they arrived some of the eight that arrived in the last year could well go through the revolving Tottenham doors and those highlighted would currently seem to be those most in danger, Chiriches because of Kaboul’s ongoing injury concerns and Chadli because of a decent run of form would seem safe as would Roberto Soldado, who will surely find goals begin to flow soon.

Will Tottenham go into the market in January? if Defoe heads off to Toronto then surely he will have to be replaced as to go into the final phase of the season playing 4 4 2 with only two strikers would be nothing short of madness, but then this is Tottenham and Harry Redknapp tried to do it. Will they look for cover for Danny Rose or a replacement for Younes Kaboul ? maybe but I would not count on it as Sherwood prides himself on knowing and trusting the Tottenham youth.

Tottenham are already out of the Capital One Cup and they have a difficult away tie at Arsenal in the FA Cup, that has now become a massive game for both clubs and probably more so Arsenal which is a concern, as things stand the FA Cup could well soon be their only chance of success this season, Bayern in the Champions League should see the end of that dream and they are dropping down the league, Tottenham need to progress as such a big squad needs games to play in and they would only have the Europa to contest, although in all honesty a decent chance of progression.

So we enter another era of hope and expectation, upheaval and drama made more so because we have no idea what to expect from our new man, one of our regular readers made a very pertinent point yesterday and I hope he won’t mind me using his analogy of the situation;

“As a Spurs fan, Tim Sherwood is our manager. I intend to support him with every bit of me, and I know that every Spurs fan will do the same. This will be one hell of a ride. I will enjoy it. Tim Sherwood is like a learner driver given a Ferrari, he will either drive straight on the PL motorway, or drive it straight into the wall! Either way, it will be an interesting journey. COYS!”

We are Tottenham and irrespective of our thoughts it is what it is, some of us hope that Tim Sherwood has more in his tank than simply a  basic idea of 4 4 2, Tottenham have the players to morph into just about any formation to get the job done  against most opposition, I am a little concerned that the contract is only for eighteen months as that does not suggest as much belief from Levy as he has suggested but might be sensible in the circumstances.

What better fixtures coming up than a couple of home games against two sides struggling in most departments as WBA and Stoke make a visit, but the challenge steps up by a few notches in the New Year with United and Arsenal away to contend with.

Lets hope the wheels haven’t fallen off come the end of January.
