Why the fuss about Champions League football.

Posted on May 08, 2013 by Guest Writer

As a player what is the fuss about playing Champions League football? Every year the major clubs player 6 matches in a league format and rarely are there any upsets. 90% of the fancied clubs generally go through comfortably before some decent action begins in the knockout stages. Luka Modric left Tottenham this season citing his wish to play in the Champions League and as one of the best midfielders in the world what he got was 6 starts, some meaningless as the job was done e.g. Ajax and Galataseray, and 5 substitute appearances, he totalled less than 600minutes of football and an average of 54 minutes in each game.

Manchester City and their team of mercenaries lasted a total of just 6 games as they finished bottom of their group and their whole season rests on winning the FA Cup this weekend.

The press and ex-players are relentless in their efforts to sell Gareth Bale off to a club competing in the Champions League suggesting that Tottenham are holding him back, the truth is that since he became a regular starter in the Tottenham team 3 seasons ago Bale has improved as a player each season, by a significant margin this year with 20 Premiership goals so far.Since breaking into the Tottenham team he has won the players Player of the Year award twice, the Young Player of the Year award and the Football Writers Player of the Year and each season he has been rewarded with a new contract and a bumper wage increase.

Still only 23yrs old he has plenty of time to take the easy option and play in one of the easy Leagues like the Italian, Spanish or German where only 2 clubs ever compete for titles and trophies. Bale is earning a fantastic wage already and he will almost certainly sign a new vastly improved contract soon, he is becoming a great player with Tottenham, enjoying his status as the star and seems to be part of a very settled and happy setup led by Villas-Boas.

Even if Tottenham again fall short in their quest there still seems a genuine belief that the club are destined to challenge for the Premiership title very soon and are close to actually winning trophies, they are certain to buy better players this summer and continue their progression. Players like Gareth Bale have a great rapport with the fans and as such will feel a massive sense of achievement if the club are able to deliver some success.

Half of all the clubs who enter the Champions League competition are knocked out after just 6 games as happened to Chelsea and City this season and Manchester United last season, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have won their leagues at a canter and have only faced a decent challenge in the Champions League hence their ability to last the pace, similarly the second placed teams Dortmund and Madrid.

The reality is that the clubs themselves earn a vast amount of extra revenue for participation and if on a regular basis would be able to offer ever higher wages to the players, money is the main concern of players but in the case of Gareth Bale he is well rewarded by Tottenham at present and glory with the club he seems to love is his main motivation. He seems sure to give AVB more time to try to bring the success he craves as the ambitions of Tottenham grow each season, the new improved stadium will open in a couple of years and will bring the club even greater impetus. Bale seems to have bought into the ambition of the club and looks certain to stick around to see it through.
