Will Arsenal cave under Tottenham pressure?

Posted on May 13, 2013 by Eddie S

We have been here many times before, Tottenham going into the final week of the season needing some sort of result to ensure that they achieve the right ending and cheer all their supporters, usually the pressure is on Tottenham to achieve an unlikely result as they face the most difficult task of all the teams involved. This season is a little different, by winning at Stoke yesterday the pressure was transferred entirely onto the Arsenal team as they now face 2 difficult fixtures, first up is the new FA Cup winners Wigan a team on a high and also knowing that only a win at the Emirates gives them any chance of saving themselves from relegation.

On the final day Arsenal face a trip to Newcastle a team that challenged for a top four position last season and finished 5th, since then they have sold Demba Ba and bought countless new players but have struggled and have been in relegation trouble most of this year. Their coach Alan Pardew has stated that now safety is guaranteed he is not at all bothered whether they suffer a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal next week! Even though he was awarded an 8 year contract at the start of the season that is a rather flippant remark and his position must still be in jeopardy. To take a team from 5th to the point of relegation in the very next season must set alarm bells ringing as a familiar pattern is forming, a great start followed by collapse. Pardew has been sacked from his last 3 positions at West Ham, Charlton and Southampton and should probably look to finish the season with an outstanding performance against one of the top clubs or he might just find the supporters putting pressure on the club to look for an alternative. If Wigan fail Martinez would be considered a perfect fit for a club like Newcastle who have underperformed for years, their crowds and level of support should have them challenging at least near the top.

In the past, apart from the period of wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City which got them into the Champions League a few years back, it has generally been Tottenham that has fallen short, this season they have done all they can to put the onus onto Arsenal who are in the driving seat and are sufficiently experienced to go on and win their final 2 games, if they do it will be deserved as they have gone about clawing their way back after falling 7 points behind following defeat at the Lane.

It now comes down to 3 massive games with the five clubs involved each possibly having a  huge incentive to perform and obtain a result. Arsenal probably know that they must win both of their games, Wigan certainly know that they must win both of their games or they will be relegated, whatever happens Tuesday Tottenham will still need to win their final game, Sunderland could line up against Tottenham needing at least a point if Wigan win at Arsenal. Newcastle as a club need nothing as they are safe but Pardew as a coach cannot afford another poor performance or capitulation to Arsenal, his job and the support of every Geordie is on the line.

What will be will be but we live in hope that results go our way for once.
