Will Captains armband come with new contract for Vertonghen?

Posted on September 09, 2014 by Scraggs

Yet again it is being reported that Jan Vertonghen is close to securing a new deal with Tottenham, he seems very happy with what he has seen so far and has even got over the failed efforts to sign Welbeck before deadline day but seriously it does seem that he will be given a wage increase and that will come with an extended period on his current contract. Most of us probably consider that Hugo Lloris is the most likely candidate to succeed Michael Dawson as club captain, but if Jan Vertonghen has regained his hunger and his form of that first season with us then he will be one of the few players likely to be guaranteed a place in the starting lineup.

With so many new additions and the vast majority of the squad now reaching satisfactory fitness levels it is going to be interesting to see the starting lineup on Saturday and just who will be leading the team out. As we have previously said it narrows down to three possibilities in our view, Younes Kaboul as club captain though not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup with Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen as the only other viable options, Lloris is the French captain while Vertonghen led Ajax during a very successful period.

Vertonghen’s agent continues to say the wrong things, he argued that Vertonghen was looking for Champions League football this season but then had to admit that there were no offers for his clint, or none that were attractive and he has apparently said the same if Tottenham fail to land champions League football!

If Vertonghen signs his new contract it will mean he earns more money but it won’t guarantee that he will see out his contract for longer than a season, but if he is released from it then that new contract will ensure that somebody has to pay through the nose for him.
