Will Eriksen injury open the door for Erik Lamela?

Posted on November 16, 2013 by Scraggs

The picture of Christian Eriksen being helped from the field in his countries 2-1 friendly win yesterday could not have done much for AVB’s plans. Eriksen returned to the team against Newcastle and on first reflection his game appeared below par, the reality actually was that apart from his poor dead ball delivery the remainder of his game was actually very good. With Eriksen due to receive an ankle scan before the injury can be properly diagnosed the thoughts from his national coach suggest an absence of between four and six weeks. Christmas or early in the New Year would seem to be the earliest that Eriksen will return which is perhaps not so bad as the FA Cup begins as well as the knockout stages of the Europa League. Hopefully Tottenham will still be involved in the Capital One Cup as well if West Ham are defeated in the quarter finals and progression maintained. AVB still has the option of slotting Lewis Holtby into the playmaker role or perhaps Gylfi Sigurdsson might be moved back across to his more natural position in the centre and we know that he has a goal or two in his armoury. In certain circumstances AVB might feel that the time is right to give another of the record purchases his opportunity to shine. Erik Lamela was superb in his last outing against a decent Sheriff team,

they were certainly the best cup side that Tottenham have faced so far this season and gave good performances in both legs. In that game Lamela started on the right before beginning to roam all over the pitch, almost in a free role and not unlike the situation that Gareth Bale found himself in at a similar stage last year, from a central position he drew the penalty which ultimately gave Tottenham victory and Jermaine Defoe the chance to break Tottenham’s European goalscoring record. That spectacular piece of skill in an area defended by so many players could only have been made by a player of quality. Perhaps the time has come to play Lamela in a free roaming role in order to run at defences and create openings, he is quick, he is strong and seems to thrive on the battle with defences, the more that they kicked and fouled him the more he came at them. He is not shy of a bit of hard work and seems more than willing to work for the good of the team. In tight games it might just be that a maverick like Erik Lamela could make the difference, he did so against Sheriff and he was the difference between a point and three points against Cardiff as he managed to open them up with seconds to spare. Take a look at this video of Lamela’s performance against Sheriff, he operated centrally and on the right and caused the Sheriff defence all sorts of problems: AVB is not afraid to try different options but as well as helping a young player settle in at his new club he also needs to handle the situation carefully, most experts and Tottenham fans, who have become accustomed to seeing players of star quality, recognise that they have a potential superstar in their midst, we have seen the like of Hoddle, Gazza, Ginola, Ardilles, Berbatov, Modric and Bale and plenty more over the years, provided Lamela is handled carefully and he maintains fitness he could go on to join those names. With the injury to Eriksen and the form Lamela showed in his last outing AVB could take the opportunity to utilise Lamela in a free role in some games, a player of his ability could be just the answer to unlock defences and play closer to Soldado at times enabling Tottenham to switch from 4 5 1 to 4 4 1 1 quite seamlessly, with the workrate and eagerness of Kyle Walker to operate on the right it shouldn’t have a detrimental effect on the teams efficiency.

One players misfortune could be the making of another and Erik Lamela, just like Andros Townsend, might be the one to make a difference and become a hero
