Will Tom Carroll’s return spell the end for Lewis Holtby?

Posted on January 02, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

There has been increasing talk of a return to the German Bundesliga for Lewis Holtby as Schalke in particular seek midfield reinforcements this winter. With the news that Tottenham have refused permission to QPR for Tom Carroll to play in this weekends FA Cup fixture while allowing for Assou-Ekotto to play, the suggestion is that Tim Sherwood could be considering withdrawing him from his loan spell at the halfway point.

There are a few different scenarios to consider, Tottenham have a number of injuries in the midfield department and with both the FA Cup and Europa League still to contest, if Tottenham successfully overcome the Arsenal hurdle in the third round they will need options if their priority of a top four position in the league is to remain a possibility.

Possibly Tottenham have a better option for the remainder of the season for the young starlet, a couple of years back the same scenario happened for Kyle Walker when he was withdrawn from his spell at QPR and joined Premiership club Aston Villa, he was called up for England duty and returned to Tottenham the following season and never looked back.

The other possibility is due to ongoing concerns regarding Lewis Holtby, he has slowly been squeezed out a little by Sherwood after being a starter or on the bench in earlier games, he was played in a holding role alongside Eriksen against WBA which clearly didn’t work and since then he has been conspicuous by his absence. Holtby is still only 23yrs of age and will improve, his enthusiasm and effort has endeared him to Tottenham fans, he has proved himself to be a gamechanger when brought on from the bench and he has started to threaten the opposition goal more in recent appearances. Maybe he needs a period out on loan to play more regularly before returning for next season or might Daniel Levy see the opportunity to cash in on a player worth far more than his initial fee of just over a £1m.

Decisions on a few issues might have been discussed but until such time as the club know their FA Cup fate it is unlikely matters will be resolved, early next week or after a replay, if that’s what it takes, will allow the club to take stock and make the right moves for all concerned.

Mmm, I’d want to know firstly why Tommy has been on the bench for much of his time in the Championship and also, what he could bring to the game that Holtby can not.

I’m assuming Levy would not cash in on Holtby over winter if it is going to leave us short for the rest of the season.

he had an injury from which he only recently recovered, playing four genuine midfielders actually leaves us in good health, as they start to return from injury over the next few weeks there will already be massive competition with a couple of youngsters to add to the equation. They say you can pay over the odds in January and that might appeal to the money man.
