Yesterday disappointment, today a new challenge begins.

Posted on May 20, 2013 by Eddie S

We have been here before with last day disappointment and failing to see through the aims of the season, it feels no different to defeat in a cup competition that it was hoped Tottenham would win and it happens to every club. Today is the start of another adventure and with even greater optimism, Tottenham now have an extremely strong squad with a few exceptional players and many very good players,  most are of an age where the expectancy will be that they continue to improve.

Overall this has been a very good season, a record points haul of 72, most away wins in a season with 10, victories over 3 of the teams finishing higher in the league, most importantly a coach able to get the best from his players and change the course of a game with changes to either the system and/or with substitutions. AVB turned a team giving away late goals and points into a team able to change the course of a game with so many late comebacks or strikes to gain points. Tottenham have become a team that has learned how to win and lost just 2 games of the last 22 played and they finished the season just 6 points shy of 2nd place.

The moneymen of Tottenham now know just what Villas-Boas is capable of and will now set about handing him some of his targets for the coming season, there will be some disappointments as players wanted might be encouraged to choose another club. it won’t be about Champions League but in truth it will be money, last summer it was reported that Oscar was all but signed and sealed before Chelsea came in with a huge fee and wages, that could happen again but Tottenham will bring in some better players simply because they now have a coach that they fully trust and is part of a longer term strategy.

As we all know Tottenham started the season with just 2 specialist strikers and lost them both for periods through various injuries and the African Cup, neither have been consistently good enough with only 5 goals between them in 2013, it appears that efforts were made to bring in a target or 2 in January without success and it was decided that rather than bring in a stopgap as last year with Saha, they would try to manage the situation. Gareth Bale stepped up as did Dempsey and Sigurdsson to an extent but it was not enough.

What changes might we expect will include the disposal of one of the forwards at least, Adebayor seems the most important part of the setup and is consistently chosen over Defoe but there are noises about Monaco interest in him and if the offer comes in he might well end up there. The contract of William Gallas comes to an end and due to his age and injury problems of late he will surely be released, but fortunately Younes Kaboul will be ready to start the new season and a full complement of quality central defenders will be in place. This might be the time when Scott Parker moves on seeking a new challenge although much will depend upon his own plans, he is still a good player and as cover or to assist with bringing along the younger players in cup competitions he could be retained, he might also be a future coach with the club, based upon yesterdays performance he is also very useful to have as backup when needed.

It is difficult to know what others might be allowed to leave, Tom Huddlestone has played regularly of late, he was perhaps expected to leave in both of the past transfer windows, there is still much to come from Sigurdsson and Holtby and they surely have a big future and are the type of players needed, Tom Carroll might find himself loaned out to a Premiership club for 6months to gain experience while Townsend and Rose will surely return to feature on a regular basis.

Every Tottenham supporter hopes that the club finally secure their major purchases quickly this summer, once pre-season begins AVB will still have plenty of opportunity to assess the players and balance of the team and still add the missing ingredient if he feels necessary.

Goals and a playmaker is probably all that is missing and it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
