Yet another player looking for Tottenham exit

Posted on January 15, 2014 by Eddie S

Reports are continuing to grow that yet another of Tottenham’s recent recruits is seeking a way out as Nacer Chadli’s agent Daniel Evrard is another who has confirmed that his client fears for his place in Belgium’s World Cup squad. He said: “Nacer  has had to play in a role which doesn’t suit him. They wanted him to play on the left wing and he is not exactly a winger – he prefers to play through the middle. It’s very difficult for him because we’ve not seen the best of him at Tottenham. He has big potential so he is a little bit frustrated.”

Tottenham have purchased nine players in the last twelve months yet only Paulinho and Soldado have managed to to secure a regular start in the team and neither have yet managed to become firm favourites with all the fans as yet. Chiriches, Eriksen , Holtby, Capoue, Chadli, Fryers and Lamela have all made minor contributions, Chiriches more so because of injuries to Vertonghen and Kaboul.

£100m spent and many more more millions on wages, contracts and payments to agents yet nobody has yet told us who was responsible for buying all these players and just what was the plan at the beginning of the season. From what we understand AVB had very little say in who turned up over the summer so was it all down to Baldini, Levy the scouts or other backroom staff? Right now the summer spend feels as though it was simply a ruse to calm the masses after Levy sanctioned the sale of Gareth Bale just a year after selling Luka Modric.

A few months ago there was an amazing feelgood factor around Tottenham even though they had just sold quite probably the third best player in world football, the club had implied that the money raised enabled the them to build a squad for the future capable of challenging the very best, it was a part of the grand vision of Levy when he sacked Redknapp and employed a young innovative Villas-Boas. After a few months of the season all seemed to be on track as we waited for the newcomers to settle and the team to evolve but clearly not everything was as it seemed, AVB’s position was being compromised, the media began to stir up trouble with leaks from within beginning to appear on a regular basis and now find ourselves at a crossroads.

Daniel Levy is a financial supremo having built Tottenham up to a position where they are threatening to gatecrash the party at the very top of the tree but the last four or five months has seen him take his eye off the ball. Most supporters are confused and disappointed, those that complained that the team was boring seem to have been calmed by four league wins in five and yet to me there has not been any significant increase in flowing football but a few more goals granted. Players with massive potential are desperately seeking the exit, there has been no significant movement on the building of the new stadium, Sainsburys is up and running but no date in sight for the stadium to start or finish.

Expectations have fizzled away over the last month and at the moment it is hard to be excited by the Sherwood appointment as he is untried as a coach at any level, players are looking to leave, Defoe has signed for Toronto and it seems that his replacement will be found from within, Chadli and Lamela have been mentioned by Sherwood as offensive players if needed yet both seem to want a move elsewhere!

I doubt anyone knows where this season is going but there should be hope and expectation simply because of the quality Tottenham have, more importantly three of their biggest stars are approaching full fitness, Townsend, Vertonghen and Paulinho are edging closer to selection and they might just be the ones to really ignite the season, if Soldado finds his shooting boots and one or two others start to click the quality is there and this might still turn into a special season. Swansea and City are next up and we shall know more once those games have played out.

So far this season has not panned out anything close to how planned nor expected when the stars from around the world began to sign for us over the summer, but clearly all is not yet lost, four wins and a draw from five without ever hitting the heights or the potential within this group of players should still give hope. Seventeen games and fifty-one points are at stake as well as the Europa Cup and everthing still to play for.

It has to be clear at this stage that AVB had very little say in who was brought in other than giving (or being allowed to give) general requirements for future signing.

I say this is clear because if AVB had hand-picked the signings brought in then there is no way he would have been sacked having let him loose with the purse-strings. The players bought were the players any Spurs manager would be managing.

For me, many of those signings were made with the intention of “fattening” them up and later bringing them to the mart.

The mistake we fans are making is thinking it was a return on Bale – giving us something back for his loss. They are all just potential Bale’s – any one of them shining enough will be sold on and more ‘potentials’ brought in.

It sickens me hearing the likes of Chadli and Lamela might be seeking an exit.

Perhaps these are just slow news day stories or agents trying to position themselves and their clients away from poor form and slow adjustment, but really these ‘class acts’ should be concentrating on their game which if good enough would leave little worry over national team selection.

For me, Chadli and Lamela have been enormous disappointments and have done nothing to excite.

Young Bentelab has easily impressed me far more, perhaps because he is concentrating on his game, his club and getting his head down and working hard.

I second that. It’s like we have just wasted £100 million as only 2 or so of the players bought has been productive. I keep looking a the transfer links and papers just with the faint hope that we will be seriously linked with anyone.

If Chadli wants to leave , then so be it. I’m tired of agents undermining the club by using the same club to tout their players. He is with a club, he has a contract, why not keep your head down train hard and justify your weekly wage instead of just complaining of wanting to play in the World Cup? The only player I will hate to see leave will be Holtby. I see him being a great player for us. The question his does our management team see him in the same light. It seem we have not learnt our lesson of holding on to our young players. Would we have had the Bale money if we had got rid early when he was not performing? We all know what happened after that. COYS!
